Sad!! I went for a duty trip on the 10th day of October 2024. On that trip, I ran into an old-time friend who narrated his medical ordeal that he has been going through for over 6 years. We regularly speak on the phone, but he never mentioned that he has been struggling with a terminal medical condition.
In his usual cheerful manner, he also gave me a quick download of things that has happened around Abuja, where he has been living since after our National Youth Service. You need to see the shock in my eyes when he cleverly took a jab at me, saying that I should not neglect my health in the quest of chasing after materialities.
I subtly glanced at myself, but he quickly interjected me saying that he wasn’t referring to me, that he was talking to his past self who neglected his entire life just for material things.
His last statement was:
“Neglect your life and chase after wealth, your enemies will inherit your wealth when you are gone.”
I became more confused at this his statement because I could still see that he is alive – how else would I be speaking with if he has passed on?
This powerful quote resonates deeply, especially in a country like Nigeria where the economic struggle is real, and many are focused on financial survival. Yet, no matter how tough the situation is, health must come first.
No amount of wealth can replace a life lost due to negligence. It is time to start asking ourselves, what is the true cost of pursuing wealth at the expense of our well-being?
In Nigeria today, financial hardship is not just draining pockets, but also health and mental wellness. We are in an era where inflation is skyrocketing, the naira is devaluing, and unemployment is widespread.
These factors are making it more difficult for many Nigerians to prioritize their health. People are working longer hours under immense pressure to make ends meet, often neglecting the most basic health checks and care in the process.

The Health Risks of Economic Hardship
Studies show that individuals facing severe financial stress are more prone to developing chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, and even mental health disorders like abnormally high level of cortisol, anxiety and depression.
Hospitals have seen a significant rise in admissions due to high blood pressure and psychiatric breakdowns, exacerbated by financial difficulties. Many Nigerians are suffering in silence, opting to continue working instead of seeking medical help, in the hope that things will get better.
But this is a dangerous gamble. We’ve seen real-life cases of Nigerians, particularly breadwinners, who kept pushing their limits to provide for their families, only to suffer major health crises—heart attacks, strokes, and severe depression.
Once they fall critically ill, the same wealth they were chasing is then used to foot medical bills, sometimes with no recovery in sight. In the worst cases, these individuals leave behind a legacy of unfulfilled dreams, with their families scrambling to pick up the pieces.
Have a Shift in Mindset Because Wealth is Meaningless Without Good Health

Wealth means nothing without health. It is crucial to prioritize regular health checkups and to make time for physical and mental wellness. Don’t wait for a major health event to remind you of how precious your life is. Taking small steps like regular medical screenings, balanced healthy diets, and stress management measures can go a long way in ensuring you enjoy both your wealth and life.
With economic hardship, it is understandable that Nigerians might feel like they don’t have the luxury of focusing on health, but small changes in lifestyle and routine can prevent larger health complications down the line. Start by making healthier food choices and incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Something as simple as walking or engaging in enjoyable activities can make a huge difference in reducing stress and preventing chronic illnesses.
Protect Your Wealth by Protecting Your Health
The road to wealth is paved with hard work and determination, but your health is the vehicle that will carry you to your destination. Without health, everything falls apart. Take time to invest in your health today, so that your wealth does not end up in the hands of others tomorrow.
Let this be a reminder to every Nigerian: you are the most important asset you have. Wealth will come and go, but your health is irreplaceable.
